For this project I worked as a product designer for an up-and-coming experiences startup called LocalEyez. LocalEyez suggests local events and experiences based on user interests. I was tasked with designing the mobile UI for LocalEyez based on the adaptation of their current web product. In addition to designing the mobile UI inspired by their web product, I also designed an intuitive onboarding flow to ensure our users’ preferences and interests were a priority.

LocalEyez created a web product that uses machine-learning to provide its users with local events and activities based on their set preferences and interests. The company wants to improve branding and create a mobile version of their web product that is fun, intuitive, and simple for their users.
LocalEyez’s redesign incorporates personalized machine-learning and interactivity to match user’s interests with suggested local events. Additionally, a customizable profile page allows users to change personal preferences and interests at any time.
Since this project involved working collaboratively with LocalEyez’s current team on an existing web product, there was already some initial user research completed. This research included user personas, comparative analyses, moodboards, site maps, and digital web wireframes.
A comparative analysis was conducted in order to understand how other design solutions for machine-learning based mobile interfaces are successfully catering to their user’s needs.
Users are able to choose from categories, hosts, and locations in order to find something that interests them. The experiences section include animals, cooking, adventures, and more. Being able to choose a host allows users to select an experience by clicking on an image of a host and viewing a description of the activity. Lastly, users are able to search for locations to stay either locally or around the world.
Meetup is an online service that creates groups to host local in-person events. It is advertised that customers can use Meetup for networking purposes, making new friends, and to find activity groups.
One of the high priority features for the app was having an intuitive onboarding process. Below is a user flow that illustrates the steps the user will take when going through the onboarding process.
Using the existing color palette, moodboard, and logotype as inspiration I began designing the mobile UI for LocalEyez. For the splash page I went with an image background to convey the message that LocalEyez connects its users with fun and engaging in-person activities.
Finally, in order to test my design solution with real users I had to bring LocalEyez to life by creating a prototype. I accomplished this by creating a high-fidelity prototype using Figma and tested the designs with users through a Guerrilla Testing format.
Guerrilla testing refers to gathering user feedback on a prototype/design in the form of asking users to perform various tasks or explore the product while observing their behaviors, thoughts, and expressions. This allowed me to observe how real users would interact with my design solution and idenitfy any areas of improvement.
Based on the usability results I came to the following conclusions. My recommended iterations to the design solution would be to address these identified pain points.
Throughout the design process of adapting LocalEyez’ web product into a mobile UI, I used innovative machine-learning technology to design an engaging and intuitive product. Additionally, I learned the value of gathering user feedback in the less structured format of guerrilla testing. This form of testing allowed me to gain design insights that I may not have gathered if I used a more structured, tasked-based usability test.
