Overview

Summary

For this project I was tasked with taking existing wireframes, style tiles, moodboards, personas, and comparative research and designing an engaging and intuitive mobile UI for the client’s grocery app, My Daily Nosh. This app required innovative machine learning technology in order to create a personalized and customizable grocery app experience based on users' inputs.

Problem

The client, Swanky Food LLC, wanted to create a grocery app that suggested recipes and shopping lists based on users’ budget, preferences, lifestyle, diet, location, and past purchases. Additionally, there would be a fridge/item scanning feature that allowed users to directly scan the contents of their fridge and receive recipe recommendations based on what they had.

Solution

I used Swanky Food LLC’s teams’ current deliverables of style tiles, moodboards, comparative research, and wireframes to create a trendy and intuitive grocery app that used innovative machine-learning technology to satisfy all business requirements and provide a fun and useful product to their users.

Process

Discovery & Research

Since this project involved working collaboratively with Swanky Food LLC’s current team, there was already some initial user research completed. This research included user personas, comparative analyses, moodboards, and digital wireframes.

Comparative Analysis

A comparative analysis was conducted in order to understand how other design solutions using machine-learning technology successfully met user needs, specifically in the grocery shopping/delivery business.

Listonic

Listonic is described as being a ”smart shopping list” app. This product offers features including sharing/dictating shopping lists, providing smart suggestions to users, grouping items into popular categories, as well as adding prices to selected items in order to support users' budgets.

Yummly

Yummly is a content driven app, which provides recipe suggestions based on users preferred diets and tastes. This product allows users to browse recipes and save them to their profile. Additionally, this app has a shopping list feature that recommends recipes based on the items in the users list.

Digital Wireframes

Below are screenshots of the digital wireframes the design team at Swanky Food LLC created.

Branding

The client provided me with the following branding assets that embodied the desired aesthetic and styling of My Daily Nosh.

Mockups

After reviewing the digital wireframes and branding assets provided by the design team at Swanky Food LLC, I created high-fidelity mockups to present my design solution to the client.

Client Feedback

Based on these designs, the client had some feedback before moving on to user testing. The client expressed that they wanted to highlight the UI for the machine-learning feature of the app by incorporating a ‘past orders flow’ which incorporates the actions below:

Usability Testing

After incorporating the client feedback into my designs I created a high-fidelity prototype to test this new flow with real users. I tested my solution through the online platform Maze.

Outcome

Based on the usability testing results I came to the following conclusions about the new past orders flow:

Final Thoughts

This project challenged me to create an engaging and intuitive UI that not only supported machine-learning technology, but also adhered to the client’s branding and existing wireframes. I continued to grow my UX/UI design skills while being part of a team with a collective vision for a product. Additionally, when designing a product intended to use machine-learning, the emphasis on user preferences and their ability to make their experience with the product customizable was of the utmost importance.
